Sun goddess: how to take care of your skin while tanning

We’ve all been guilty of spending too much time in the sun, but over time, our skin will start to feel the effects. So, how can we get our tan on without damaging our skin long-term?

Avoiding skin damage

While spending time outdoors helps boost the body’s Vitamin D levels, it’s important to be aware of the dangers sun damage poses to our skin’s ability to age well. The figures make for uncomfortable reading: 80% of skin aging is associated with repeated exposure to UV rays, with even daily levels  gradually reducing the thickness of the epidermis. As well as excess UV rays, humidity can also destabilize skin’s defenses, which also makes it harder for skin’s natural barriers to deal with redness. Long-term, sun damage encourages the spread of free radicals, which destroy skin cells’ structure. This slows down collagen production and accelerates the signs of aging.

Replenishing your skin after a day in the sun

Naturally, we tend to perspire more in warmer weather. When dehydrated, the skin’s mineral levels take a nosedive, meaning it’s crucial to refresh skin by drinking enough water and ensuring your mineral intake remains stable. A spritz of Vichy Mineralized Water will help keep you cool despite the heat, as well as restoring the minerals your skin loses when the sun’s rays are at their peak. Florence Bénèche, Head of International Product Development at Vichy, explains that Vichy’s Mineralizing Water reinforces the skin, better protecting it against external aggressions thanks to its unique formulation of 15 key minerals. What’s more, its antioxidizing properties help to counteract free radical damage caused by the exposome, reinforcing skin’s natural defenses by up to 20% compared with untreated skin.

Finally, if you really can’t resist getting your UV dose, stay out of the sun between 11am and 3pm when its rays are strongest. Skincare products with a high SPF (sun protection factor) that reinforce skin’s natural ‘buffer’ can help preserve balanced pH levels, which helps protect against problems such as redness. Dermatologist Dr. Nina Roos recommends carrying a hydrating facial mist for long days out in the city, adding that mineral-enriched sprays such as Vichy Mineralizing Water are great for soothing complexions that may be suffering as a result of heightened pollution and UV rays.
